Elmore Oil Company will partner with The Smith Family to generate funds for Aussie kids in sport .......
In 2006 The Elmore Oil Company officially launched the Future Champions Program, to assist the development of aspiring young Australian athletes. Targeting athletes in the 12 – 25 age bracket and with very simple qualifying criteria, Aussie kids have been able to obtain financial grants to assist with travel, high level coaching, purchase of equipment or access to competitions in their chosen field. The administration and selection process will be managed by a panel appointed by The Smith Family and the program will be co-promoted to the community by The Smith Family and the Elmore Oil Company. The company’s managing director, Mark Linford, says the company is excited about the prospects of the partnership, helping Aussie kids to reach their dreams in their chosen sporting field, as well as contributing to personal development. Program ambassadors include Australian Olympian, Kyle Vander Kuyp, Australian Road Bike Champion, Zak Dempster, Australian Track Cyclist, Jessica Berry and 2008 Olympian Joel Milburn. A Field of Dreams for one Young AussieFor one young Australian sprinter the Olympic dream has just come true. At 22 years of age Joel Milburn has experienced a meteoric rise to stardom in the last 18 months, after first receiving a grant from the Elmore Oil Future Champions Program in June 2006, which helped propel his career through to the professional ranks.
In March this year the precocious young sprinter claimed one of his biggest scalps when he powered past Commonwealth champion John Steffensen to win the 400 metre gold in the Australian Athletics Championships
While Steffensen dominated the first half of the race, young Milburn stepped on the gas in the later stages to power home past the pre race favourite in a time of 45.90 seconds.
In April this year on the back of his sporting success, along with the way he has conducted himself in his career, Joel was invited to join an elite group as an ambassador for the Future Champions Program: a program that only 18 months earlier he was a recipient of.
This outstanding program, which is a joint venture between the Elmore Oil Company and the prestigious charity organisation The Smith Family, provides financial grants to young Australians to assist them to develop their fledgling careers.
More than 60 young Aussie kids have so far received funding from the program and Joel Milburn has to be the epitome of success when it comes to the desired outcomes. From a recipient of a grant to an ambassador of the program and now an Olympian: all in the space of 18 months. Managing Director for the Elmore Oil Company, Mark Linford, says that Joel is a great example of what can happen when passion and determination crosses paths with financial funding.
“The Future Champions Program was established to assist young Aussie athletes who have potential in their chosen field to meet the demands of travel and competition, by providing financial assistance during the crucial early years of their development. Of course our goal is to see kids succeed in life, as much as in sport, but sport is such a great starting ground to develop the skills of persistence and determination, which ultimately carry you through life.”
“We know that not everyone makes it to Olympic standard”, said Linford, “but what a great ambassador Joel Milburn has made, by demonstrating how far you can come in life with passion and persistence. From grant recipient, to grant ambassador, to Olympian in less than 2 years. He is a shining light for us and a role model for all young Aussie kids.”
Milburn has just returned from the Grand Prix meet in Lucerne, Switzerland, where he ran his personal best time of 44.99 seconds. If he can replicate that time in Beijing he will make the final of the 400 metres.
“What a great story and we are proud to be associated with it, particularly at this very special time as we head into one of the best Olympics that we may ever see.” |
